Greg Carroll Greg Carroll, (Oncearound) Skipper, Ship's Surgeon, grew up sailing in Biddeford Pool under the tutelage of Andrew J. Lindsay whose admonishments to do it correctly haunt us to this day! Medically hoping for one delivery onboard to round out OB-GYN training...............will settle for an appendectomy. Sailing experience includes many miles on the Concordia Yawl MOONFLEET slogging to Bermuda, freezing to St. Pierre and Miquelon, dying of boredom in the St, John (NB) river. Former business partner of Brian Harris (which see below) at Rumery's Boat Yard, INC. Now happily living in and sailing out of Blue Hill where in June of 2005 he is likely to return to take up gardening and other land sports. |
| Justin Bauer Justin Bauer, (Oncearound) Mate, Bos'n. A Blue Hill summer-dub, learned to sail at the Kollegewidgewok Yacht Club. Opti's, 420's, Atlantic class crew. Justin is on the Hobart William Smith College sailing team and just prior to departure raced at the college nationals for H-WS. He is taking his junior year afloat and will return to college in the Fall of 2005 (..............or there will be hell to pay for many of us!) In addition to excellence with a chamois and a can of Brasso, Justin has a great sense of adventure and takes it in stride when the old guys don't want to fly the 'shute at 25-30 kts. |

Brian Harris Brian Harris (Newport to Ireland [at least]) Watch Captain, Communications Officer, Vice Curmudgeon. Brian first learned to sail on Lake Erie in Buffalo and in High school ran off to sea in a ferro-cement tall ship..............reason being that by the '70's the circus had stopped coming to Upstate New York. Brian studied naval architecture and boat building at the Landing Boat School in Kennebunk and from 1992-1998 was a partner and CEO of Rumery's Boat Yard. He is now freelancing as a shore specialist in the OPEN CLASS round the world races. We are glad to have Brian along with us and reserve--entirely-- the right to re-write that about 10 days out from Newport.

Peter McPheeters Peter McPheeters (Newport to Ireland) Watch Captain, Purser, Provisioner. Currently the Commodore of the BPYC (it is about time). Peter learned to sail in Biddeford Pool and was another product of the AJLindsay seamanship school. Peter is currently playing hooky from the OCEAN VIEW PROPERTY Company ......but hell who is going to want to look at a house in June or July...or for that matter during the St Tropez Regatta in September .....or the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in April? Peter is a founding member of the All Beef Patty Crew. |

Jamie Houtz Jamie Houtz (Newport to Ireland) Engineer, vice provisioner, wooden boat crank. Jamie grew up in a seaside community in West Virginia where, as a youngster, he learned to play the banjo. He has sailed extensively in the Gulf of Maine and the Caribbean. His knowledge of wooden boats and construction is extensive and it might be said that Jamie is to a rotten floor timber as a Perigord Pig is to a truffle. He is currently the Manager of the Boat Building Program at The Landing School in Kennebunk. |
| Jesse Deupree Jesse Deupree (Irish Cruise)Watch Captain, Tactician, opinionator. Another product of the Andrew J Lindsay school of sailing, seamanship, and general lore. Jesse owns an F-27 and has sailed it extensively including an annual cruise on Moosehead Lake and a trip down the St. Lawrence Seaway chasing beluga whales. Jesse was the skipper of the original All Beef Patty Crew. |

Christopher Carroll Christopher Carroll (Irish Cruise) crew, nephew, God son, earned his slot on Thunderhead the old fashioned way. Grew up sailing in Biddeford Pool the last generation to learn in the Turnabouts. He is currently practicing architecture and living (...until he gets caught) in a loft on the Boston Waterfront. Greg and Shep will take a day or two to go uncover their roots in County Cork....and Greg'll be the designated driver! |
Matt Rooney Matt Rooney (Ireland-Med) Watch Captain, Radio Geek, grew up in Portland Ore but ended up in Portland Maine after misreading a road sign while riding home on his bicycle from Southern California. Decided to Stay. A great sailor and seaman, first trip to Europe. Matt's other boat is hidden behind the house on Vaughan Street where he thinks that the Landlord doesn't know about it! |

Martin Bretigniere Martin Bretigniere (Ireland-Med) Bos'n mate, will learn the fine art of brass and brightwork polishing from the esteemed Bos'n heretofore mentioned. Martin grew up in Marseilles where he began sailing Opti's at the age of six. He has sailed and raced in 420's and other small racer/cruisers. He has competed in national and international regattas in France. He sailed out of the Yachting Club de la Pointe Rouge. Martin was an Exchange student in Freeport during the 2002-2003 school year. His ability to speak French has NO bearing on his getting a berth on Thunderhead as we sail to the Med. |
Chris Plumb Chris Plumb, (Med-Canary Islands) purser, Carbohydrate consultant, Ship aesthete, Chris grew up sailing at the Cape of Cod. He was present for the trial sail on THUNDERHEAD in the fall of 2002 and was aboard for the VERY best passages of 2003, lack of engine notwithstanding. His favorite job on THUNDERHEAD is at the helm in dense fog, 14 kts of wind and the spinnaker up. Was it unfair to tell him that Madeira was the biggest Outlet center east of Freeport? |

Hal Carroll Hal Carroll (Canary Islands-Antigua) ship's admiralty lawyer, Ordnance officer, Head rapper, bird guy. Attempting to set a new CBonSBTWMI time record. Oh!.......that is ...........Carroll Brothers on a Sail Boat Together Without Major Incident. Major incidents include winch handles blows to the cranium , poisoning, or water disembarkation. In charge of Thanksgiving Dinner. Stuffed albatross? |
Jane Carreiro Jane Carreiro D.O. (Canary Islands-Antigua) Ranking Ship's Surgeon (hey.. she is my boss). Jane is the Chairman of the Dept of Osteopathic Medicine at UNE. She is on board to study the relationship between equilibrium and GI disorders at sea. This is her second crossing from the Canaries to the Caribbean........... I swear this one will be better, Jane! |

Bill Anderson Bill Anderson (Canaries to Antigua) is another product of the BPYC sailing program. His Turnabout, too, sported a jib made from a sheet and safety pins (poor man's snap shackles). Bill was a fierce competitor in racing those boats and later his Rhodes 18 PTARMIGAN. In the late 1980's Bill owned SNOWSTAR and through pure luck, questionable tactics, and a performance enhancing crew roster edged out MOONFLEET in their final meeting at the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. (Frankly, it is amazing that he was even invited on this crossing). Most of us learned piloting and basic navigation from his father William G. on charts laid out over a ping-pong table. We will look forward to his inside scoop on Antigua after we arrive. |
Alexander Vial Alexander Vial--qualifications-nephew, French speaker. Alex' other sea ventures have been along the Maine coast in rowing boats with Chewonki and Outward Bound. When he first came aboard Thunderhead I found him looking for a pair of oars to hang off the bow to do his business. He seemed quite excited and relieved when I showed him the Head with a pump action porcelain toilet. Also, he did not seem disappointed that we didn't have swim call at 0630 every morning! He will be with us from La Ciotat to Gibraltar. |

This is the daughter of the Vicar (Peter-which see above) and my God daughter. In addition to the religious instruction I have provided her through out her life, she will now get some offshore sailing on the east side of the Atlantic. She will be joining us from Gibraltar to Madeira and the Canaries. She is an active flag officer of the BPYC and a graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She has published a short story in Maine Boats and Harbors and as such is quite qualified to do lots and lots of ships logs! |
Patrick Reilly Patrick Reilly, Mt Desert Island, Maine. Captain (pro tem). We met Patrick as we landed in Antigua on December 9th. He was hanging out and we needed someone to hangout. Patrick is a woodenboat person having rebuilt a couple and appreciating the rest. The last one was a 23 foot gaff rigged cutter which he subsequently sailed to Antigua then last Spring sailed from Antigua to Ireland via the Azores, 47 days......alone! (23 feet, 47 days, alone----What is he? ..from France or something?) He has set a new standard for brass polishing on Thunderhead which should quickly serve to alienate him from most every other crew member of the last six months............Good work, man! |
